Despite economic hardships, Entebbe residents uplift spirits with Christmas cheer

As the Ugandan economy continues to face challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation,  Entebbe residents have nonetheless found ways to celebrate the Christmas season with optimism and community spirit.

While higher prices on basic goods have squeezed budgets for many families, that did not stop locals from decorating their homes and public areas with festive lights and decorations.

Downtown Entebbe streets were lined with colored lights, stars, and nativity scenes in an effort to lift moods and bring some much-needed cheer during these difficult times.

At church services on Christmas Eve and Day, parishioners packed pews to participate in mass and carols despite economic pressures that have caused loss of livelihoods for some. Religious leaders emphasized the true meaning of Christmas – that of hope, love, and togetherness – to encourage congregants.

Non-profit groups and local volunteers also organized several community events, such as toy and food drives, to ensure underprivileged children could also enjoy the holidays. With support from businesses and individual donations, they were able to distribute gifts and meals to families in need.

While recognizing the hardships many currently face, Entebbe residents seemed determined to not let economic woes dampen their Christmas spirit.

By coming together through decorations, religious worship, and community outreach, Entebbe showed that with unity and compassion and people can overcome life’s difficulties and find light, even in challenging times.

As one resident noted, “Christmas is a time for hoping and caring for one another, and that is what this season is all about.”
