Pupils and teachers forced to share pit-latrine at Mbale city school

In a distressing situation, pupils and teachers at  Busajjabwankuba primary school in Mbale are compelled to share a pit-latrine due to inadequate facilities.

The sorry state of pit-latrines in most government schools exacerbates the problem, highlighting the urgent need for improved infrastructure.

According to Mr. Joseph Byassi, a local health worker, the pupils face significant challenges during break and lunch hours.

“It is very surprising that both female and male pupils including teachers share the facility which has broken doors and windows and is almost filled up . These people risk contracting sanitation related diseases , “Mr Byassi said .

The demand for the limited number of pit-latrine stalls results in thick queues forming, causing inconvenience and discomfort for the students. Regrettably, there is no established protocol regarding the order in which genders access the facilities.

The dire conditions at the school underscore the pressing need for immediate attention and intervention. It is essential for authorities to prioritize the well-being and dignity of pupils and teachers by investing in modern and hygienic restroom facilities.

By addressing this situation, the school can create a more conducive learning environment and promote the health and safety of its students.

The plight of pupils and teachers sharing a pit-latrine at Mbale School highlights the broader issue of inadequate infrastructure in government schools across the country.

It serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by educational institutions and emphasizes the need for sustained efforts to improve facilities and resources for students’ welfare.
