Following the recent Uganda National Musicians Federation’s Ekyoto event, Fille Mutoni, a renowned singer, bravely shared her harrowing battle with drug addiction. The audience, filled with fellow artists and industry professionals, listened intently as she recounted how substance abuse had wreaked havoc on her life, particularly affecting her relationship with her daughter.
Fille revealed that her addiction had reached a point where she couldn’t even visit her own child at school.
Fille’s ordeal began in 2015 when her ex-manager and the father of her child, MC Kats, disclosed that she had been introduced to hard drugs such as crystal meth and crack by a friend. What ensued were years filled with rehab attempts, setbacks, and the profound impact of addiction on both her physical and mental well-being.
Acknowledging that denial had been her staunchest adversary, Fille admitted, “I started using drugs in 2015, but I continued performing until I reached my breaking point.” Despite numerous warnings about her addiction, she refused to admit she had a problem, believing she was in control. However, this denial only exacerbated her situation.
A turning point towards recovery
The pivotal moment for Fille arrived when she finally recognized that she needed assistance. After enduring years of inner turmoil, she completed her rehab program last year and has since been committed to living a clean and sober life.
Today, Fille is leveraging her own narrative to inspire and uplift others facing similar challenges. She emphasized to her colleagues that the path to recovery commences with self-acceptance. “A doctor can only help a patient who acknowledges their illness,” she affirmed. “Addiction is a chronic condition. Medical professionals can guide us once we acknowledge our struggles. That’s the initial stride towards survival.”
