Airtel Uganda and Buganda Kingdom unite to empower youth through sports at 20th Masaza Cup Tournament

In a remarkable collaboration with the Buganda Kingdom, Airtel Uganda has once again reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to nurturing an environment where the youth can thrive through the power of sports.

The grand unveiling of the highly anticipated 20th edition of the Masaza Cup tournament took place on Wednesday at the majestic Bulange in Mengo.

Ali Balunywa, the sales and distribution director of Airtel Uganda, expressed his elation at this incredible opportunity to support the vibrant talent in Buganda. Standing at the heart of the launch event, Balunywa stated, “Today, we gather once again to inaugurate the prestigious Masaza Cup tournament, now in its 20th edition.

This tournament serves as our flagship initiative, promoting unity, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering sportsmanship within our beloved country. On behalf of Airtel Uganda, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for allowing us to be part of this momentous event.”

Over the years, the Masaza Cup has transcended the boundaries of a mere football tournament. It has blossomed into a vibrant celebration of culture, a platform where young talents shine, and a nurturing ground for socio-economic networking. Recognizing the transformative power of sports, the Masaza Cup eloquently embodies this ideal, as we once again unite the masses to champion the noble cause of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.

Empowering Through Talent, Inspiring Through Unity

This year, a total of 18 teams hailing from the 18 counties will engage in exhilarating matches, mirroring the format of the past four editions. The profound impact of the Masaza Cup throughout its 19 editions cannot be overstated. It has consistently unearthed remarkable football talents who have gone on to represent Uganda both nationally and internationally.

The likes of Fahad Bayo (Ssingo), Abdu Aziz, and Halid Lwaliwa (Mawokota) now shine brightly as stars within the Uganda Cranes team. Moreover, the tournament has become a powerful catalyst for strengthening bonds within communities, inspiring countless young individuals to pursue their dreams, and giving them a Reason to Imagine, as highlighted by Airtel’s Ali Balunywa.

The captivating journey of the 2024 Masaza Cup will commence with the thrilling opening match between Bulemezi and Buluuli at the iconic Kasana grounds in Luweero District on June 22, 2024. This year’s tournament will not only showcase the prowess of the kingdom’s men but also rally all Ugandans in the fight against HIV/AIDS, aiming to bring an end to this devastating epidemic by 2030

Airtel Uganda’s Impact Beyond the Field

The esteemed Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, graciously acknowledged Airtel’s invaluable contribution to the Masaza Cup, which has evolved into a highly sought-after event on Uganda’s sports calendar. Mayiga emphasized the positive impact that the tournament has had on the communities it operates in, stating, “We extend our deepest gratitude to partners like Airtel Uganda, whose unwavering support plays an instrumental role in the successful implementation of our initiatives. We continue to rally not only the people of Buganda but also individuals throughout the entire country to support Airtel by utilizing their network to connect with loved ones and business partners.”
